TikTok Shop is the commerce feature built into TikTok. It opened in the UK in 2021 and in the United States in September 2023, and it now runs across several European markets too. Everything happens in the app: the product page, the order, the payment, the tracking.

What's solid, for buyers
- Payment is contained. Every legitimate TikTok Shop order is paid inside the app's checkout, never on an outside site, so there's one clear line between a real purchase and a scam.
- Buyer protection covers the standard failures: an order that never arrives, arrives damaged, or arrives different from what the listing described.
- Ratings and reviews are visible per shop and per product, so you can tell who you're buying from before you pay.
- The order, tracking, returns and seller messages all stay in one place in the app, which makes disputes much easier to evidence than an email chain with a random store.
What's weaker is the spread between sellers, which is true of any marketplace: actual build quality, optimistic delivery windows, flattering photos. TikTok secures the transaction. It does not promise the product will live up to the video that sold it to you.
So do three things before you order: read the shop rating, not just the product rating; scan the recent reviews that include photos; and price-check the item elsewhere in one search. Thirty seconds, and it heads off most bad orders.

Any push to pay outside the app
The number one signal, common to every scam variant. A link in bio for a "better price", a DM with a payment link, a QR code in a comment. Nobody legitimate needs you to leave TikTok checkout to buy a TikTok Shop product.
Brand names at impossible prices
AirPods at $25, a designer bag at $40. That isn't a discount, it's a counterfeit or a bait listing. Buy brands from the brand's own shop or an authorized reseller.
Review patterns that don't look human
A cluster of five-star ratings posted the same day with near-identical wording, all text and no photos. Detailed reviews with real photos are far harder to manufacture, so weight those.
Fake support accounts
A profile messaging you about a "payment problem" on your order, asking for card details or a verification code. The real refund flow never asks for your card number and never happens in DMs.
The ordinary disappointment
More common than outright fraud: the product arrives, it works, and it's simply less impressive than the video that sold it. That's the marketplace risk everywhere, and recent reviews usually flag it before you order.
Returns and refunds: how it actually goes
You open the request from the order, in the app, flagging an item not received or not as described. The seller can accept or dispute; if they dispute, TikTok rules on the evidence. So keep the packaging, take photos on arrival, and keep the conversation inside TikTok's messaging where it can be read as evidence. The exact return window is displayed on your order, and it varies by item and category: trust that screen over any number you read in a comment.
Your legal backstop depends on where you are. In the UK, distance selling rules give you 14 days to change your mind on most items, with exceptions written into the law such as sealed hygiene products. In the US there is no equivalent federal right to return, so what protects you is TikTok's own buyer protection policy, the seller's stated return policy, and your card issuer's chargeback process as a last resort.

For buying: legit, with the usual marketplace caveat. Pay in the app, give the shop rating the thirty seconds it deserves, and skip brand names priced like they fell off a truck. The protection works when you use it; seller variability is the real subject, not platform legitimacy.
