How to make a TikTok carousel in Canva, step by step

Sacha JibrilBy Sacha Jibril€1,000,000 in TikTok Shop GMVPublished July 28, 2026

Canva builds a TikTok carousel perfectly well, and the setup below is the one that avoids the two problems that ruin most of them: the wrong canvas, and text buried under TikTok's own interface. After the tutorial comes the part a Canva tutorial usually skips, which is what a design tool leaves entirely on your plate once the goal stops being a nice-looking slide and starts being a sale.

The Canva tutorial in 6 steps

  1. 1

Create the canvas, do not pick a template

Custom size, 1080 by 1920 pixels. Add one page per slide inside the same design instead of opening a separate file for each: the export then gives you numbered files in the right order.

  2. 2

    Place your real product photo

Use the photo the buyer will see on the listing, not a stock lookalike. Shoppers open the product page right after the swipe and compare the two, so a mismatch costs you the sale and, when it doesn't, costs you the return.

  3. 3

Write slide 1 as a hook, not a title

One line, roughly 8 to 12 words, set large. A title describes; a hook promises something the next slide has to deliver. This is the step Canva can't do for you, and the one that decides everything downstream of it.

  4. 4

Keep the copy inside the safe zone

Leave the bottom quarter empty, since the caption, the username and the buttons all sit there. Stay clear of the right column and the top strip too. Draw a guide rectangle on page 1 and duplicate it onto every page so you can't forget.

  5. 5

One idea per page, CTA on the last

Duplicate the page and change one thing at a time: the benefit, the proof, the use case. The final slide asks for the click, in plain words, with the product tagged on the post.

  6. 6

Export as PNG, then post from your phone

Download every page as PNG, move the files to your phone, and create a photo post in the TikTok app by selecting the images in order. Add sound, caption, and attach the product.

Exact dimensions and the areas TikTok covers are in the TikTok carousel size guide, and the posting flow, sound and product tag included, is in how to post a carousel on TikTok.

The Canva mistakes that cost sellers the most

  • Exporting JPG or PDF. TikTok recompresses your upload and JPG artifacts land first on the edges of letters.
  • Starting from an Instagram or LinkedIn template. Those canvases are 1080 by 1350 or square, so TikTok crops or pillarboxes them.
  • Type set too small. On a 1080 pixel wide canvas, anything under about 40 pixels is a squint on a phone held at arm's length.
  • Animated elements, videos or GIFs in the design. None of it survives a PNG export, and photo posts are still images.
  • Twelve slides because the design was fun to make. Most carousels that sell run 4 to 8, and every extra swipe is one more chance to lose the reader before the ask.

On the plan question, since it comes up every time: the free tier covers everything above. Custom canvas sizes and PNG export are not gated, and those are the two things this tutorial depends on. The paid tier mainly widens the template and stock library, which on a product carousel is the part you need least, because the photograph doing the selling is one you already own.

Where a design tool stops when the goal is selling

A TikTok Shop carousel isn't a poster. It's a sales sequence read by a stranger whose thumb is already moving, and almost everything that makes such a sequence work happens before you open a design tool, or after you close it.

  • The copy is on you: hook, proof, call to action. That is the half that sells, and the half that takes the longest.
  • Templates are decorative by design. They were drawn to look good in a feed, not modeled on carousels that moved units on TikTok Shop.
  • No data. Canva can't tell you which angle is working in kitchen gadgets this week, or which products are selling in your market right now.
  • Time per post. Done properly by hand, a carousel is typically a 30 to 45 minute job, which is hard to sustain at several posts a day.
  • No compliance check. A line like 'clears acne in 7 days' sails through a design tool and gets your post pulled on TikTok Shop.

None of that is a knock on Canva, which was built to design and does it well. It's simply why a good-looking carousel can still flop, and why the sequence deserves more of your evening than the font pairing does. The mechanics are broken down in the TikTok Shop carousel guide, with 8 real sequences in the carousel examples that sell.

Canva for one-offs, a generator for cadence

These aren't rival tools, they answer different questions. Canva is the right call when you want full control of a layout, a branded asset, or one hero post you're happy to spend an hour on. It's the wrong call when the plan is three carousels a day across several products, because the hour doesn't shrink with practice as much as people expect.

For that rhythm, the TikTok carousel generator writes the copy for a proven angle, renders it into the image in your language, keeps your product photo untouched, respects the safe zones and strips risky claims on the way out. Plans start at €29 a month with 250 credits, and the first replication is free at sign-up, which is the cheapest way to put both outputs side by side on the same product and judge for yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Is Canva free for TikTok carousels?
Everything in this tutorial works on the free plan: custom canvas size, text, photo uploads and PNG export. What the paid tier adds is mostly library access, part of the templates and stock visuals. On a product carousel your own photo is doing the work, so that is rarely what stands between you and a good slide.
What size should a TikTok carousel be in Canva?
Create a custom size design at 1080 by 1920 pixels (9:16) and add one page per slide. Portrait 3:4 (1080 by 1440) also works and leaves more of the image visible above the caption. Never start from an Instagram template: those are 1080 by 1350 and get cropped.
How do I post Canva slides on TikTok?
Download every page as PNG, move the files to your phone, then open the TikTok app and select the images in order to create a photo post. Add a sound and your caption, and attach your TikTok Shop product before you publish.
Should I export PNG or JPG?
PNG. TikTok recompresses whatever you upload, and JPG artifacts show up first around the edges of letters. On slides where the whole pitch is text, that is exactly where you cannot afford softness.
Why do my Canva carousels look good but get no sales?
Almost always the angle, not the design. A carousel that sells opens on a hook that stops the thumb, proves one thing per slide and closes on a call to action. Clean typography on a weak sequence still gets scrolled past.
