The store inside the app
Before TikTok Shop, a creator who recommended a product had to send people somewhere else: link in bio, a redirect, a checkout on another site, and most of the audience lost along the way. TikTok Shop deletes that trip. The product is tagged on the post, the product page opens in the app, and payment happens there too.
Three things live under the TikTok Shop name. Shoppable posts, where a product tag sits on a video, a carousel or a live stream. A Shop tab, which is a browsable catalog with categories and search. And each seller's own storefront page, reachable from their profile. All of it is TikTok, not a partner site: that single fact is also your first fraud check, and we come back to it in is TikTok Shop legit.
Where TikTok Shop is available
The UK was TikTok Shop's first market outside Asia, back in 2021. The United States followed in September 2023, and it has since become the platform's largest Western market by far. Several European countries came after, France, Germany, Spain and Italy among them.
Availability is set country by country, and that matters more than it sounds. You sell into the market where your shop is registered, so a product that is saturated in the US can still be untouched in the UK or Germany. Formats travel faster than products do: the same carousel structure that sold a kitchen gadget in the US usually works on the same product in another market, months later. That gap is the whole reason Carouscale indexes carousels across 6 markets instead of one.
Buying: what the flow actually looks like
When a post is shoppable, a small product tag appears on it. Tap it and the product page opens: photos, price, variants, shipping estimate, reviews and the seller's rating. You check out in the app with your saved payment method. After that, tracking, returns and messages to the seller all stay in one place, under your orders.
Whether that's safe is a fair question, and it deserves its own page. What buyer protection covers, the scams worth recognizing, and how refunds actually go are in our honest TikTok Shop review.
Three ways to make money on it
- Seller: you open a shop in TikTok Shop Seller Center, list your products, hold the inventory and ship the orders. Opening the shop is free; TikTok takes a fee on each sale instead of a subscription.
- Affiliate creator: you promote other sellers' products with the product tagged in your posts, and you earn a commission on every sale attributed to you. The seller sets the rate product by product; across the carousels we track it usually sits between 5 and 20% (observed July 2026). No inventory, no shipping, no customer service.
- Both at once: plenty of sellers run their own content and also open their catalog to affiliates, so other creators sell for them on commission.
If the seller route is what you're after, how to sell on TikTok Shop walks the full path, and the Seller Center guide covers the back office you'll live in. If you'd rather start with no inventory, read the TikTok Shop affiliate guide, and run a product through the commission calculator to see what a sale would actually pay you.
The part beginners underestimate: it runs on content
Nobody types your shop name into TikTok. Sales come from posts the algorithm decides to show, which means the real job, seller or affiliate, is publishing consistently. That's where most people quit: they set up the shop in an afternoon and then post twice a month.
Video takes shooting and editing. Live takes an audience you don't have yet. A photo carousel takes a handful of product shots and one line of text per slide, so you can put out four in the time a single video costs you. That arithmetic is why it's the format to start with. The TikTok Shop carousel guide lays out the method, and the carousel examples break down real posts slide by slide. You can also do all of it without ever showing your face.
Frequently asked questions
- Is TikTok Shop free to join?
- Yes on both sides. An affiliate creator pays nothing to join and gets a commission per sale. A seller pays nothing to open a shop either, because TikTok takes its cut per order instead of charging a monthly fee. What that cut is depends on your market and your product category, and it is published in Seller Center.
- Do you need followers to use TikTok Shop?
- Not to open a shop as a seller: that side runs on business verification, not on audience. The affiliate program is where a threshold applies. In the US, TikTok's published bar is 5,000 followers plus being 18 or older; other markets set different numbers and TikTok adjusts them, so check the requirement in the app before applying.
- Can you use TikTok Shop without making videos?
- Yes. Photo carousels are shoppable exactly like videos: a few product images, a short line of text on each slide, the product tagged on the post. No filming, no editing, no showing your face. It's the format most people should start with, and you can publish several a day.
- How is TikTok Shop different from Amazon?
- Amazon runs on search: someone already knows they want a thing and types it in. TikTok Shop runs on discovery: the algorithm puts a product in front of someone who wasn't looking for it, and the content does the selling. That's why a new seller with no brand can move volume on TikTok Shop, and why nothing sells there without content.
- Does TikTok Shop ship internationally?
- Mostly no. Each market is its own marketplace: a US shop sells to US buyers, a UK shop to UK buyers. TikTok does run cross-border seller programs in some markets, with their own requirements, but as a buyer you should expect to shop the catalog of your own country.
